In reference to Patrick Irwin’s Chain Free Asheville letter:
A dog chained is at risk for so many deaths and atrocities. They can be attacked by bears, other dogs, Copperheads, and worst of all by human beings. A dog chained has no way to escape a pot of boiling water, a baseball bat, a car, a knife, gasoline and a match or a gun. They are doomed to starve to death or die of thirst in unrelenting heat or a freezing winter. They may have a shelter to escape rain and blazing sun or they may have nothing more then a car to lie beneath parked near their cinderblock where they are chained. They may be an older dog who has somehow managed to survive years of neglect or the may be a 12-week-old Pit Bull puppy padlocked to logger chain.
There are many, many people who love their dogs and because of finances have no other way to keep a dog except on a chain as keeping a dog in the house (for whatever reason) is not an option. These human beings are open and receptive to organizations like Chain Free Asheville and welcome an opportunity to reduce the suffering of their animals.
There are others who have no heart and have dogs simply to torture, eat (dog eating is happening in the US), bark at strangers or law enforcement. They can walk past a starving dog into the safety of their dwelling eating a Big Mac and think nothing of the poor animal that will be dead soon from starvation, dehydration, worms and exposure to the elements. These are the ones that dogs and all animals need to be protected from.
